Food Without Thought

Think back to a time in your life when everything was going right. You were madly in love. You had an abundance of money. You were working on an exciting project at work. You believed in yourself and the life you were living. You were on a natural high. Did you think about food?

Think back to when you were a child and loved to play outside. You climbed trees, played games like tag or rode your bike with your neighborhood friends. You dreaded when your mom called you inside to eat dinner. You wanted to stay outside with your friends and play. Did you think about food?

Now, think about a time in your life when you were depressed or struggling with your self-esteem. You were constantly worrying about things out of your control. Your finances were unstable. Your house was unorganized. Did you think about food?

Food provides us with the nutrition our bodies need to sustain health, but we also feed our bodies in other ways. When we are having fun, enjoying life, living in the moment food and feel loved, food becomes secondary to us. We feed our soul with life when we have meaningful relationships, spiritual practices, enjoyable physical activity and careers. The more satisfied we are with these aspects of our lives, the less we desire food.

This week take a moment to reflect on the things going right in your life and appreciate every aspect. Also, think about areas, such as your career, spirituality, relationships or physical activity that needs attention. Choose one area that needs the most attention. Ask yourself, what is one thing I can do to improve this area of my life this week? What is one thing I can do today? What is one thing I can do right now? Write it down and do your best to accomplish these goals this week. Feel free to leave comments and share your experiences.

I leave you today with a recipe I tried yesterday that was simple, easy and delicious.

Pumpkin Smoothie
1/2 cup puree pumpkin
1/2 cup unsweetened, vanilla almond milk (or vanilla soy milk)
1/2 cup ice
1 tbsp. agave nectar
1 tsp. pumpkin spice
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp ground ginger

Place all ingredients in the blender. Blend until all ice is crushed. Enjoy!
